Back from the pits: The repercussions from the sudden shock of widespread pit closures six years ago are only just beginning to recede

All of the mining areas in the UK have suffered since the start of the pit closures, but the East Midlands fared better than elsewhere, mining profitably and continuing with investment programmes. However this meant that it was hit all the harder when the pit closures finally came. There were just 2,400 miners employed in the six remaining pits by 1994, and the levels of retraining and redevelopment are only just starting.
