Can COM Survive the Eighties?
Article Abstract:
Computer-output microfilm (COM) devices remain a viable solution to information management despite the emergence of new technologies such as optical disk systems. The COM market has annual growth rate of ten to twelve percent. COM devices convert computer-generated, machine-readable Information into human-readable information on micro-fiche or microfilm; optical disks are not in human-readable form, they are converted to human-readable form using a CRT. Today most optical disk systems are used for source-document systems. Advantages of COM devices included meeting archival standards, meeting standards of permanence, the ability to make on-the-spot duplicates, cost effective equipment, and compact microfilm storage. Generally manufacturers are continuing to make COMs with a trend towards devices with more capabilities as well as production of low-cost systems. COMs and other information management systems will likely work together in the future as in intelligent CRTs on a COM device. NCRs in-line COM system is shown. A drawing shows a typical COM system. State-of-the art COM equipment including document management software from 3M, COMs using a laser imaging system from Kodak, and other products are shown.

Protecting our heritage
Article Abstract:
Some observers feel that the UK government's most recent consultation document on the built heritage of England and Wales takes a misguided approach, as it focuses on maintaining the historically, architecturally or culturally significant elements of the built heritage at any cost. Instead, it would be better to allow for historic buildings and manufacturing techniques to be adapted where necessary, taking into account the significance of economic and industrial growth. It is also necessary to state in detail what constitutes 'the curtilage' of a building when it is listed.
