Article Abstract:

The UK property industry has reacted positively to most of the recommendations contained in the 'Towards an urban renaissance' report from the Urban Task Force. These recommendations cover management of urban areas, sustainable cities, funding and monitoring and recycling of land and buildings. Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott has backed one of the main recommendations of the report, the creation of urban regeneration companies in designated urban priority areas.

The UK government's decision to refuse the 60 million pounds sterling leisure scheme on the greyhound stadium in Hackney, London, England, was withdrawn in Mar 2000, but the developers still have not received approval. Some observers believe that the handling of this project will deter private sector funders and developers from considering risky regeneration schemes.
