Report: some EU nations losing 'economic competitiveness.' (European Union)

Article Abstract:

The 1996 'World Competitiveness Report' by the World Economic Forum has revealed that countries belonging to the European Union are lagging behind countries in Asia and North America in economic competitiveness. This was due to extremely high tax rates which support their social welfare systems. Also, language differences have served as barriers for European workers to work outside their own native land. Lastly, smaller economies such as Hong Kong, Luxembourg and New Zealand tend to be more competitive.
