The U.S. Pacific: California's comeback anchors West Coast location surge

Article Abstract:

The US West Coast is making a strong comeback as one of the top business locations in the country. This trend is led by the state of California, which has emerged from the economic decline of the early 1990s and is again attracting multimillion-dollar corporate facility investments from all over the world. Oregon and Washington are following close behind, with many high technology firms setting up operations in these two states. Hawaii and Alaska have small local markets and their distance from the US mainland has dissuaded some investors, but their proximity to rapidly growing markets in Asia and the Northwest also make them attractive to many firms.

The new business location process: who's driving, and what's steering?

Labor quality and availability, overall operating costs and state and local business climate are the top three site selection factors. Since modern jobs are more demanding, companies are reportedly on the lookout for workers who can read and understand math well. Other factors that were also deemed vital were work-force training, quality of life, low labor costs, cost and reliability of electric power and natural gas and accessibility.
