Trouble on the tube

Article Abstract:

The Conservative government reduced investment in the London Underground, England, by 50 million pounds sterling for 1997-98 making a total investment of 650 million pounds sterling in the Nov 1996 budget. The organisation London First maintains that the Underground requires at least 350 million pounds sterling annually to keep the system running and 1.2 billion is needed to fund the shortfall in investment over the preceding years. It is feared that poor service may make customers use their cars more frequently. The Labour government favours private-public partnerships to fund new work.

Sea change ahead for coastal towns

Article Abstract:

Coastal towns in Sussex, England, have suffered during the recent recession because of poor East to West communications. Unemployment levels, particularly in East Sussex, are high in relation to the rest of the country. New road development is expected to improve the employment situation, although bottlenecks are anticipated on the remaining sections of single carriage-way. Brighton is the main focal-point for economic growth in coastal Sussex, and this pattern is expected to continue until a dual carriage-way is in place to disperse business activity.
