Beth Henley's "The Debutante Ball" and the modern neurosis
Article Abstract:
'The Debutante Ball' by playwright Beth Henley is given limited perspective as a play that challenges the tropes of feminity validated by the traditional Southern United States ritual of the coming-out party. It is argued that the play can be viewed as a means of coping with what Sigmund Freud described as the neurotic condition in the manner discussed by Camus in 'The Myth of Sisyphus'.

Article Abstract:
The main motive of William Gilmore Simms in composing Michael Bonham was to test his ability to write a drama, and other was a political intent that was to support the annexation of Texas. It is also revealed that the drama was a failure aesthetically and financially and thus during the congressional debate to annex Texas it failed to promote southern expansionism.
