Building Shanghai, one page at a time: the aesthetics of installment fiction at the turn of the century
Article Abstract:
An overview is presented on Chinese fiction writing and publication during the Ch'ing (Qing) dynasty's final two decades, at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries. The popularity of the installment or serial fiction format can be attributed to its spatial and temporal consistency of content, the psychological addiction created by interruption of the narrative line, and the complexity of subjects.
