Burma-China relations: playing with fire
Article Abstract:
Myanmar's close relations with the People's Republic of China will not be beneficial in the long term. Abandoning the policy neutrality and nonalignment of previous governments, the military regime under the State Law and Order Restoration Council relied on China for military and economic support. However, increased Chinese military presence in Myanmar threatens relations with its neighbors, particularly ASEAN member countries and India. Growing Chinese influence in the economy may also lead to ethnic conflicts within the country.

A new approach is needed in dealing with Burma that recognizes the shortcomings of both sanctions and 'constructive engagement'.
