"Business as usual" in Suharto's Indonesia
Article Abstract:
Suharto's leadership is as strong as ever despite the elections in May 1997. He imposed political controls amidst the frustration of some of his people. His regime claims to have created Pancasila democracy only for Indonesia. Only the Golkar, Unity Development Party and PDI, an amalgamation of the old nationalist party and small Protestant and Catholic churches, are recognized. He tightened his grip on opposition groups and/or dissenters since 1994 and also in the 1996 riots. He can do the same with the 1997 elections. Succession in Indonesia entails national unrest and violence.

Indonesia in 1994
Article Abstract:
Indonesia's political system has identified itself with democracy, although some of its features can be considered as anti-democratic. These features include the lack of a system of judicial review and a tradition of peaceful succession to the presidency. Although the People's Consultative Assembly is deemed as a mechanism for succession, it has never used this power to name a successor to Suharto, who has held power since the 1960s. The assembly should adopt a system of succesion for the presidency to prevent abuse of power on the part of the Indonesian president.

Democratization and political succession in Suharto's Indonesia
Article Abstract:
Indonesian Pres Suharto's democratization efforts are being undertaken to perpetuate the military leader's power. These efforts include the decrease of the Indonesian Armed Forces' political role, reduction of military officers appointed to the cabinet, selection of a civilian to head the ruling political party and the unhampered rise of student and trade union protest movements. Democratization, however, will only be achieved after Suharto's rule since he still maintains control over the country's political and economic resources.
