Pascal and the personal in French
Article Abstract:
The French tradition of literary 'querrelles' is examined in relation to the issue of the personal mode in criticism, with a focus on Pascal as a forerunner of the modernist mistrust of the personal. A confrontation involving Montaigne, Pascal, Voltaire and Rousseau is discussed.
