Literary agents and the novel in 1996

Article Abstract:

The French novel enjoyed in 1996 a good and even typical year, and a significant change in French artistic life is the literary agent's growing importance. Such agents started out dealing mainly with translation rights and branched out to representing French writers. As might be expected, French publishers tend not to be very pleased with this situation. Literary publishing is not very lucrative, and agents' fees further decrease the profit margin.

From maison d'edition to librairie: the novel in 1995

Article Abstract:

A manuscript pursues a circuitous route from the publisher's mailbox to the bookstore window. The member of a reading committee who likes a manuscript has to persuade other members of its value. At Les Editions Gallimard, France's most prestigious publishing company, 20 to 30 unsolicited manuscripts arrive daily and are subject to a three-part triage. French publishing companies try their best to be objective in a subjective field.
