Engendering cultural memory in selected post-Wende literary texts of the 1990s

Article Abstract:

The works of Monika Maron and Martin Walser as examples of the influence of gender on memory are discussed. In her fictionalized biography "Pawel's Briefe" Maron challenges official East German historiography. Martin Walser's "Ein springender Brunnen" insists on the validity of private memories of the Nazi era and insists on closure of the public debates of this era.

A literature of theory: Christa Wolf's 'Kassandra' lectures as feminist anti-poetics

Article Abstract:

A reading of Christa Wolf's 'Kassandra' as part of her 'Frankfurter Poetik Vorlesungen' is used to show her wish to confront rather than adhere to generic boundaries in this work. She activates the reader by making Kassandra less independent and avoids ending the narrative by constant cross-referincing of fiction and theory.

Rereading Christa Wolf's "Selbstversuch": cyborgs and feminist critiques of scientific discourse

Article Abstract:

This discussion of Christa Wolf's sex change story "Selbstversuch" uses feminist approaches to the history of science, studies on cyborgology, and literary-cultural studies challenging the sex/gender system. Wolf's work was famous in the old East Germany.
