Article Abstract:
The family history of the Arthur Blechynden, son of Richard and his successor as superintendent with respect to the ideas of individuality and of race are discussed and incomparable opportunities for studying domestic life among middle-level British residents of Calcutta are offered by the voluminous Blechynden diaries, in the British library. Household crimes and domestic order: keeping the peace in colonial Calcutta, c. 1770-c. 1840
Article Abstract:
The colonial officials created a legal context in which the rights of both, the native and European men regularly superseded the rights of women and the racial and gendered dominance was achieved through a circuitous route. The British judges, though appearing to be concerned with protecting the bodies of native women, children and slaves, made some decisions between 1770 and 1840, which enabled the lower-ranking European men to enjoy continued sexual access to local women.
