Confronting debt, poverty, and militarism: A humane program of support for the developing world
Article Abstract:
An address presented to the 17th Annual Meeting of The Association of Third World Studies, Inc discussed recent changes in the political economy that have affected the struggle for human development, and globalization. Global thinking requires the adoption of a definition of peace, as human security is a concern with human life and dignity. Global thinking also requires an expansion to the understanding of democracy, and society has to view global systems from the perspective of the culturally subjugated and the economically dispossessed.

Socio-cultural rights and development
Article Abstract:
The concept of 'development' as it is defined in the 1986 UN Declaration on the Right to Development can be considered an organization of tools or means, a process and a condition. It is argued that social and cultural human rights form the basis on which development, as a process, can properly take place. Social and cultural rights in relation to the model of development followed by the UN and an alternative model suggested are evaluated.

The end of development as we know it?
Article Abstract:
Economic development in the Third World appears to be a doubtful proposition. The consequences of neo-liberal developmentalism might, in the short run, prove beneficial to a very small elite in the First and Third Worlds and disastrous for some people in the First World and for most of the people in the Third World. However, the results will prove disastrous to everybody in the long run.
