China in 1997: a year of transitions
Article Abstract:
The economic and political conditions of China took monumental reforms in 1997. Political dissent was strictly observed throughout the year by releasing small numbers of politicians and arresting others to ensure that the notion of reviving democracy will remain bleak. The death of Deng Xiaoping deprived China the political safety the revolutionary leader provided and left Jiang Zemin to handle Hong Kong's scheduled sovereignty, the 15th Congress of the Chinese Communist Party and the presidential visit to the US. Furthermore, China's international economic position remained strong during the year.

Hong Kong in 1992: struggle for authority
Article Abstract:
Moves by the British government to democratize the government of Hong Kong prior to the colony's reunification with China has caused tensions between Hong Kong and China. The cause of the tensions is the composition of Hong Kong's Legislative Council from 1991 to 1997. The 1991 elections were dominated by the United Democrats party, a party denounced by China as subversive because of its support for the democracy movement in China.Failure to resolve this dispute could have adverse effects on Hong Kong's economy.

Chinese investment in Hong Kong: issues and problems
Article Abstract:
Hong Kong-China reunification could mean a more economically powerful China but may also mean the deterioration of Hong Kong's market economy. China-supported companies are expected to exploit privileges that could have adverse effects on the market economy in Hong Kong. One possible solution to this problem would be to delink the relationships between governments and enterprises in China. However, local governments in China are not willing to cooperate to achieve this goal.
