Japan in 1995: a year of natural and other disasters
Article Abstract:
Japan had a difficult year in 1995, with a 7.2 earthquake almost wiping the entire city of Kobe and religious cult members terrorizing Tokyo subway passengers with poisonous gas. Japan's relations with the US further deteriorated in 1995 and one of the nation's major financial institutions was barred from continuing its operations in the US for violating banking regulations. The transition from the Cold War and the Liberal Democratic Party era poses more difficult challenges to Japanese leadership.

Nuclear power development in Japan: "outside forces" and the politics of reciprocal consent
Article Abstract:
The development of nuclear power in Japan is monopolized by the private industry, which has the expertise, and the state, which has the control. Opinion polls show that a majority of Japanese oppose nuclear energy. However, opposition to nuclear energy has not changed the nuclear policy of Japan. The state is presently expanding the Rokkasho Enrichment Plant which is capable of meeting 30% of Japan's uranium needs by the end of this century.
