Taiwan in 1998: an auspicious year for the Kuomintang
Article Abstract:
Taiwan's affairs in 1998 were dominated by domestic politics, capped by the Kuomintang's resounding success in the Dec 5 elections for the Legislative Yuan. The party's convincing victory concluded a string of electoral successes which began in the Jan 24 polls and in the mayoral races in Taipei and Kaohsiung. The electoral triumphs notwithstanding, Taiwan's leaders had to contend with the Asian financial crisis and the resumption of a high-level peace dialogue with China.

The legislative Yuan elections in Taiwan: consequences of the electoral system
Article Abstract:
The December 1992 elections in Taiwan changed the perspective of the Republic of China's (ROC) constitution by making political representatives answerable to the people. In contrast to previous elections, party considerations did not affect candidacy and freedom of speech was granted unconditionally. The system has not yet become fully democratic as the media is state-owned and the president is not elected popularly.
