Civilization on loan: the making of an upstart polity: Mataram and its successors, 1600-1830
Article Abstract:
The state of Mataram and its successors in south-central Java were unable to develop an effective fiscal system and thus experienced an erosion of their political authority, especially in the Java War from 1825-30. The early modern trends elsewhere in Eurasia toward consolidation of territory, administrative centralization and cultural integration were not in evidence in the south-central Javanese courts. Mataram rose to prominence in the late 16th-early 17th centuries, drawing on imported cultural traditions from the Majapahit empire of east Java and 'pasisir' kingdoms of the north-east coast.

Unity and disunity in Javanese political and religious thought of the eighteenth century
Article Abstract:
Javanese political and religious thought of the 18th century was characterized by a belief that the temporal world of duality and difference was a mask for an eternal world of unity. This ancient Mahayana doctrine continued to be popular with court intellectuals after most Javanese became Muslims. Javanese political unity could only be achieved through war. This temporary unification of a state could be compared to the temporary unity between God and devotee, where the first could be achieved through war and the second through asceticism.
