The politics of foreign debt: the IMF, the World Bank, and U.S. foreign policy in Chile, 1946-1952
Article Abstract:
Latin American countries have used international loans to raise money for imports, development projects and government spendings and to promote foreign investment and improve advantages in trade. In World War II, Chile and other republics have experienced monetary and price inflation that resulted to gold and dollar inflation, thus weakening the currency stability and the balance of payments. As a result, Washington and multilateral agencies have influenced Gonzalez Videla's regime by using loans and other assistance projects as leverage and introducing an anti-labor campaign.
