The latest contest of the faculties: on the necessary antagonism between theory and culture studies
Article Abstract:
Theory must remain separate from and at times antagonistic to culture studies so both fields of knowledge may benefit. Culture studies has helped produce German Studies. However, culture studies has too often taken on tasks best approached through theory. Theoretical reflection must be regarded as separate from the study of a culture, so that theory can serve to refine rather than validate history.
