The latest contest of the faculties: on the necessary antagonism between theory and culture studies

Article Abstract:

Theory must remain separate from and at times antagonistic to culture studies so both fields of knowledge may benefit. Culture studies has helped produce German Studies. However, culture studies has too often taken on tasks best approached through theory. Theoretical reflection must be regarded as separate from the study of a culture, so that theory can serve to refine rather than validate history.

Some attempts to understand buildings commemorating important events in German history are discussed. The possibility complicity of the renewed interest in urban memory with the postwall reconstruction of locality as a tourist attraction is also discussed.
