Concretely imagining the Southern Digambar Jain community, 1899-1920
Article Abstract:
The Southern Digambar Jain community in India created a community identity through generating a narrative of Jain community as an extension of the local community feeling of being among people who are known. Similar to kinship and caste unity, the Jain leaders designed organizational forms that were readily recognizable in public and produced a Jain history for Jains to feel a part of. Other organizations have adopted these techniques, such as the Kiwanis club, but never to such a successful extent.

Utopia's new-found space: images of the village community in the early writings of Ananda Coomaraswamy
Article Abstract:
Ananda Coomaraswami traveled extensively in Sri Lanka in the early 1900s with the Mineralogical Survey of Ceylon, which enabled him to research traditional Sri Lankan culture. He theorized village life was held together by reciprocity, interdependence and a community of interest. He was convinced village life contained much of value in teaching modernized Sri Lankans to recover the best of their traditions.

Manufacturing village identity and its village: the view from nineteenth-century Andhra
Article Abstract:
Studies of village life in India have historically neglected villagers' images of themselves and their village. Boundary disputes illustrate the creation of village identities. Scholars do not question the categories they use in their depictions of Indians. Labels like "class-based" and "anti-colonial" are too convenient and limiting to describe complex political and historical processes.
