Cutlets or fish curry?: Debating Indian authenticity in late nineteenth-century Bengal
Article Abstract:
The role of poetry in developing the patriotic imagination is ignored while discussing the development of modern literary genres and in nineteenth-century colonial Bengal. In academic discussion the birth of the novel, the concept of history and the idea of the nation-state under the sign of the modern have led to the neglect toward the role of poetry and song in conceiving the nation.

Issues concerning the political modernization of Baroda in the early 20th century are examined, focusing on a deconstruction of the reform activities that were, to the Western mind, "ideal and progressive. Topics include Baroda's resistance to colonial life, colonial mimicry and the activities of the Maharaja of Baroda, Sayaji Rao Gaekwad.
