Guns, slums, and "yellow devils": a genealogy of urban conflicts in Karachi, Pakistan
Article Abstract:
Karachi is a deeply fragmented city with acute urban crisis due of the failure of the development plans that successive Pakistani governments have delegated to foreign experts and also due to the transnationalisation of the Afghan jihad that fuelled social and ethnic antagonisms in the city.

The rise of Sunni militancy in Pakistan: the changing role of Islamism and the Ulama in society and politics
Article Abstract:
The author discuss the escalation in sectarian violence between Sunni Muslims and the Shiite minority in Pakistan since 1979. The role of Islamic seminaries and regional politics in the increased militancy among Sunni students is outlined.
