Disappearing horizons: closural strategies in Gabrielle Roy's short-story sequences
Article Abstract:
Gabrielle Roy's semi-autobiographical short story sequences are connected partly by using strategies for closure stressing both ending and new beginning. Each successive story gains a deeper meaning from the network of associations the reader establishes by reading such a sequence. Roy calls this writing process 'rassemblement.' Closural strategies include antithesis, metaphor, using words signifying beginning or ending and punctuational reinforcement. Specific linkages between the end of individual stories and the final story are further indication of the internal progression of meaning in Roy's sequence.
