Diseases of the body politic: white slavery in Jane Addams' "A New Conscience and an Ancient Evil" and selected short stories by Charlotte Perkins Gilman
Article Abstract:
Friends and writers Charlotte Perkins Gilman and Jane Addams projected their own discomforts and illnesses into their beliefs on diseases of the body politic, and subsequently cured the 'hysteria' they incurred during their young adult lives. Addams perceived herself as a social healer and averted discussions and anxieties over her own sexuality by focusing on the sexual vulnerability of poor women in "A New Conscience and an Ancient Evil." Addams envisioned an inclusive social body, but this was refuted by Gilman who believed alien elements should be excluded.

"A man's story is his gris-gris": cultural slavery, literary emancipation and Ishmael Reed's 'Flight to Canada.'
Article Abstract:
Ishmael Reed condemned efforts to establish a Black Aesthetic as a technique to limit Afro-American creativity in ways expected by white culture. His novel 'Flight to Canada' takes the traditional form of a slave narrative while undermining its tradition through questioning Abraham Lincoln and black movements. Reed believed that the Civil War and 1960s black movements only succeeded in making oppression stronger through removing specific examples of oppression while the overall culture continued to oppress Afro-Americans.
