Effective government in Singapore: perspective of a concerned American
Article Abstract:
The Singaporean government is considered an effective development model as evidenced by the social and economic developments in the country. The system, however, limits political freedom and is occasionally criticized as repressive and autocratic. A comparison with the United States is also unapplicable in the political, social and global context. Moreover, American people take great pride in their economic, social and political freedom. America is called to give due respect and learn a lesson from other systems considering that the American system is also not ideal.

Singapore in 1997: living with the neighbors
Article Abstract:
The island status of Singapore did not spare it from being affected by developments in neighboring countries. The Asian contagion which caused the collapse of financial and stock markets in the region also had an impact on its strong economy. The pollution from smoke from Indonesian forest fires also reached Singapore, raising health concerns. Relations with Malaysia were upset by a string of incidents that included oppositionist Tang Liang Hong's flight to Johor Bahru and friction between Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir and Lee Kuan Yew.
