Flight of the deities; Hindu resistance in Portuguese Goa
Article Abstract:
The stereotype of Indian acceptance of European hegemony over their land is false and the history of Goan Hindu resistance against Portuguese Catholic authority is an example of this fact. This culture of resistance outlasted the Inquisition and a long Portguese conversion effort. Goa was of key importance in 16th and 17th century maritime trade and Hindu Goans were able to resist the Portuguese effort to change their ideological system while leaving their economy intact. The resistance lasted for the whole 450 years of Portuguese rule and forms part of Goans' collective memory today.

Home market and the artisans in colonial India: a study of brass-ware
Article Abstract:
Brassware is an Indian craft which did not succumb to competition from machinery and students of its history see a heightened competition between artisans throughout its history. The making of brassware was more costly than other crafts and craftsmen tended to concentrate in towns. Larger towns with more efficient methods of production gained the upper hand in the 20th century. The making of brassware in India is an example of the ability of some crafts to be flexible and weather fluctuations.
