Framed, blamed and renamed: the recasting of Islamic jurisprudence in colonial south Asia

Article Abstract:

Issues concerning the political history of Anglo-Muhammadan law in South Asia since the late 17th century are examined, focusing on the aspects of the jurisprudence system that combine political, cultural, and legal forces into an interpretive experience. Topics include the role of the British East India Company in the Muslim culture, apparent deference to Islamic culture, colonial codes of law, and the impact of British practices on South Asian culture.

South India 1770-1840: the colonial transition

The various differences and paradoxes manifested in the several interpretations of South India's history are explored. It is suggested that to understand the interpretations and their different inflections, some questions should be raised about the concepts and the assumptions on which the history of the South in the period 1770-1840 is written.
