Differential health and social welfare outcomes of economic development: the cases of Brazil and South Korea
Article Abstract:
South Korea and Brazil are similar in the sense that both achieved rapid economic growth through integration into the capitalist world economy under authoritarian regimes. Unlike South Korea, however, Brazil's economic development was achieved through the sacrifice of mass welfare as seen through its high mortality rate. Such a occurrence happened because Brazil's government chose to align itself to the wealthy social classes.
