Towards a decolonization of scholarship in Africa and a vision for the 1990s and beyond

Article Abstract:

A decolonization of scholarship in Africa is imperative before its present and future state can be viewed with any optimism. A reform of African scholarship is expected to lead to its increased responsiveness to the needs and aspirations of Africans. The neocolonial status of Africa's indigenous scholarship is characterized by its continued domination by foreigners and its location within the context of colonialism, thus serving European instead of African objectives. Africa's marginalization in world affairs after the end of the Cold War also contributed to the subjugation of scholarship. Other factors which had a negative impact on indigenous scholarship were the conflict between the state and the universities and political repression.
