Colonial and contemporary ideologies of "community management": the case of tank irrigation development in South India
Article Abstract:
Development institutions construct rural society in terms of organizational imperatives, and these constructions are supported by social theory. Concern with the dissolution of tank management systems in South India has its origin in the colonial administration in the 19th century. Development agencies select social theories that allow them to manage rural societies along government policy guidelines.

Orality, literacy and memorization: priestly education in contemporary South India
Article Abstract:
The education of temple priests in India, which includes oral and literary transmissions of sacred Hindu texts, is examined. The author argues that the process of learning includes verbatim memorization of written texts by the student, while the guru teaches the student how to vocalize the texts.
