Presidential address: contending narratives - the political life of the Indian epics

Article Abstract:

Political life in India has always been affected by its epics, mainly because of the marginal line separating religion and politics. Indian epics such as 'Ramayana' and 'Mahabharata,' exert significant influence on the way various Indian religious and social groups interrelated with each other. An example is the recent dispute between the Muslims and Hindus of a shrine in Ayodhya.

Visually Mapping the "Nation": Swadeshi politics in Nationalist India, 1920-1930

Article Abstract:

Mohandas K. Gandhi's call for supporters of home rule in India to buy only handmade cloth known as khadi instead of other textiles was a rallying point for Indian nationalism, or swadeshi. The use of cloth as symbol of anti-British colonialism provided a visual symbol that transcended language.
