Gazing at India: representations of alterity in travelogues by Ingeborg Drewitz, Gunter Grass, and Hubert Fichte
Article Abstract:
Hubert Fichte's approach to India in his book 'Wolli Indienfahrer' gives him a much clearer insight into the country than is found in similar travelogue books by his fellow German writers Gunter Grass and Ingeborg Drewitz. Grass's 'Zunge zeigen' and Drewitz's 'Mein indisches Tagebuch' are hegemonic works flawed by stereotypes, Eurocentrism, and their inability to mediate past preconceived notions about India. By adopting a more sensitive approach, Fichte is able to explore the Indian experience more thoroughly and look past European notions about the nature of India.

"A Time yet to come ...": translation and historical representation in Ingeborg Bachmann's poem "Night Flight/Nachtflug"
Article Abstract:
Failure to understand Ingeborg Bachmann's historical perspective resulted in an English translation of her long poem "Nachtflug" that does not accurately reflect the poem's images or intent. A new English-language version has been produced that applies culturally specific allusions and associations in the original poem.
