Vietnam in 1997: a year of challenges
Article Abstract:
Vietnam remained in an unfavorable socioeconomic and political condition in 1997. While party leaderships were revamped at the Eighth Party Congress held in mid-1996, unrest continued in rural areas because of malnutrition, conversion of farmlands into golf courses and detention of political and religious prisoners in prisons. Difficulties in the Vietnamese economy brought about by the chaos in the banking sector and indebted state-owned enterprises also occurred. Moreover, Vietnam continued to pursue diplomatic and economic relations with Asian countries.

Vietnam in 1998: reform confronts the regional crisis
Article Abstract:
The year 1998 had been a very difficult period for Vietnam, with the Asian financial crisis taking its toll on the domestic economy. Vietnam's economic downturn was evident in the decline in trade and investment with Southeast Asia, East Asia and other regions. It also had to contend with persistent peasant dissatisfaction and occasional protests, political corruption, rising criminality and the dissident Vietnam Communist Party.
