"German" literature contested: the 1991 Ingeborg-Bachmann-Prize debate, "cultural diversity," and Emine Sevgi Ozdamar
Article Abstract:
The 1991 Ingeborg-Bachmann-Prize Competition was won by Emine Sevgi Ozdamar, a controversial decision which led to an examination of the nature of German literature. Some critics wanted native speaker Urs Allemann to receive the award, instead of the non-native-speaking Ozdamar, and have unfairly criticized the latter's work as lacking a certain sense of Germanic character. Ideally, Ozdamar's work should be judged on its considerable merits and viewed in a multicultural context.
