German studies and the crisis of humanistic work

Article Abstract:

Issues are discussed regarding the proper response to the indifference to the humanistic disciplines and the resulting small language departments. Gearing departments to the study of the influence of current social problems on literature is one approach and helping some undergraduates acquire sufficient expertise in German to engage in social transactions can also be a goal.

Globalizing German studies: a new border action

Article Abstract:

Issues are discussed regarding the need for internationalizing German studies by discussing the literary output of diasporas and of identities in a global context. This approach would allow German departments link with programs not traditionally thought of as part of the field.
