H.L. Mencken and American cultural masculinism
Article Abstract:
H.L. Mencken was one of the most vociferous critics of feminism. His opinions of women were clearly indicative of his own cultural philosophy. Moreover, Mencken's views supported a model of masculinism that characterized American culture during his time. Metaphoric and generally philosophical bases contextualize most of his views within a broader environment of opinion that aimed to connect the ascent of feminism with intellectual mediocrity. Such thinking can be prevented in present times by analyzing this climate.

Thomas McGuane: nature, environmentalism, and the American West
Article Abstract:
Thomas McGuine's writings examine the role played by old mythologies of the frontier in the ecology and politics of the modern American West. His forays into these subjects indicate a complicated and unclear position to this issue that is alternately liberal, radical and conservative. The desire for a pristine nature, which is so ingrained in American culture and is practically unattainable, is central to McGuane's work. While acknowledging this desire, he realizes that urban life is also pleasurable and seductive.

What in the world interests women: Hollywood, postwar America, and 'Johnny Belinda'
Article Abstract:
1948 Warner Bros films 'Johnny Belinda' portrays the issue of gender convictions in the 1940s. The motion picture was a departure from the normal woman's film of the era as it featured a male narrator; a woman who does man's work; sex as rape rather than love; and it is located outdoors. 'Johnny Belinda' traces the transformation of Belinda McDonald from a girl considered to have learning difficulties, into a confident single mother.
