India in 1994: economics to the fore
Article Abstract:
Prime Minister Narasimha Rao successfully steered India to economic growth in 1994. Rao's economic policies also led to increased foreign investments in the country. Moreover, his Congress Party held a parliamentary majority for the first time since 1991. Under Rao, India made tremendous gains in improving its relations with other countries, with the exception of long-time rival Pakistan. However, Rao's accomplishments did not prevent his party from losing in four state elections in Nov. 1994.

India in 1992: search for safety
Article Abstract:
The year 1992 has seen the apparent stability of India's economic and political systems. However, this kind of situation may not last for long. Inherent structural flaws are hard to correct and the country is destined to undergo turbulent phases in the years to come. Systemic corruption and the absence of a strong opposition party have created multitudinous economic and political problems in the past. It is unlikely that the present administration can reverse this trend.
