India in 1997: another year of turmoil
Article Abstract:
The year 1997 saw India struggling with a fresh round of disturbances and agitations. These included the demise of the United Front government, which is a group of 14 political parties which governed India for 18 months, and shaky relations with Pakistan and China due to the Kashmir issue and Tibetan activities, respectively. The political turmoil that dominated the Indian scene in 1997 affected economic development and foreign investments, as investors became wary of the Indian market.

A new demand for Muslim reservations in India
Article Abstract:
Muslim elites in India are demanding back the vote reservation of their community as a religious minority. In a 1994 exclusive convention held in New Delhi, they identified the Muslims as a backward subcaste which entitles them to an employment quota in the civil service. However, it was argued that the advantaged Muslims in India do not represent their community and are more useful in the academe and the private sector.
