Indonesia in 1996: pressures from above and below
Article Abstract:
The year 1996 was marked by Indonesia Pres. Suharto's efforts to reverse the 5% drop in the percentage of vote that Golongan Karya (Golkar), the state party, got during the elections of 1987 and 1992 where it won by 73% and 68%, respectively. This is in preparation for the elections which will be held in 1997. Indonesia's economy, meanwhile, experienced an estimated 7.5% growth which was the result of increased domestic and foreign investment.
