Influence through arms transfers: lessons from the US-Pakistani relationship
Article Abstract:
The relationship between the US and Pakistan is examined by analyzing the record of arms transfers from the US to Pakistan and its impact on relations between the two countries and the influence of Pakistan in the region. The study shows that the US arms deals with Pakistan had a significant impact on balance of power in South and Southwest Asia. In return, Pakistani forces were exposed to Western arms and military strategies. The US nurtured the relationship with Pakistan because of its strategic capability to deter the growth of Soviet influence in the region. The US-Pakistani arms deals show that influence can be mutually beneficial.

Article Abstract:
North Korea has achieved some degree of diplomatic progress in 1996 although its politics continued to baffle observers. Economically, 1996 was a disaster for the country as flooding caused severe food shortage.
