Japan in 1994: out with the old, in with the new?

Article Abstract:

Turbulent domestic politics, an economic slowdown and foreign affairs issues were dominant in Japan in 1994. The emergence of three coalition governments following the end of 38 years of conservative rule and the approval by the Diet of a comprehensive election reform legislative package characterized local politics during the year. On the economic front, Japanese were worried over the state of the economy, particularly high consumer prices and tax reform. On foreign policy, Japan continued to adopt a wait-and-see stance, its typical response in an uncertain post-Cold War environment.

Japan's Diet resolution on World War Two: keeping history at bay

Article Abstract:

Contents of the resolution passed by Japan's National Diet in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the end of the Pacific War yielded negative local and external comments. The resolution only expressed self-reflection or remorse rather than an apology. During the drafting of the document severe disputes between politicians ensued, but their desire to stay in power forced them to approve the document. It was ascertained that Japan has failed to create a true pacifist resolution due to the identity crisis in its political system.
