Malaysia in 1992: sharp politics, fast growth, and a new regional role
Article Abstract:
The international community may criticize the way Malaysia's United Malays National Organization (UMNO)-led government manages its political affairs but the economic growth associated with the regime is beyond reproach. As expected, UMNO emerged victorious in the 1992 national elections. It is still too early to predict the outcome of Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad's policy of restraining politics yet liberalizing business. However, the nation's excellent economic performance has enabled Mahathir to establish and strengthen friendship ties with other countries.

Brunei Darussalam in 1995: new party politics and diplomatic presence
Article Abstract:
Brunei Darussalam focused on promoting more open politics and on expanding its diplomatic presence in Asia in 1995. A committee was established to study the suitability of reviving the country's 1959 Constitution, which allows limited elections to resume. Brunei hosted the annual Assn. of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) meeting in Jul. 1995 and the ASEAN Regional Forum's second meeting as part of its effort to abandon low-key diplomacy.

Singapore in 2003: another tough year
Article Abstract:
In 2003, Singapore's Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong announces his resignation to be replaced by Lee Hsien Loong before the next election. The fall in export markets and the outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) severely affected the country's economy. Singapore signed a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the United States, while its relations were tensed with Malaysia over a variety of issues.
