Remembering when: The uses of nostalgia in the poetry of Bai Juyi and Yuan Zhen
Article Abstract:
The nature of nostalgic poetry is examined by analyzing the works of Bai Juyi (772-846) and Yuan Zhen (779-831) during the Yuanhe reign (806-820) of the Tang dynasty. Their nostalgic exchanges portray the reflection and comments of Tang literati on their shifting identities, from playboys of youthful excess to responsible officials and then frustrated exiles, thus recreating the collective experience of young men in early ninth-century Chang'an.

Playing with food: performance, food, and the aesthetics of artificiality in the Sung and Yuan
Article Abstract:
Chinese, like all languages, uses many references as metaphors, even if the original meaning of the phrase is no longer relevant. Chinese is especially full of food metaphors. The preparation, serving and eating of food became ritualized and part of social performances. Theater and food were linked and both exhibited regional differences. Food also became a focal point for the night life of urban areas and affected the development of drama.
