La melancolie sans miroir: une lecture de "Brumes et Pluies." (comparison of Edgar Allan Poe and Charles Baudelaire)

Article Abstract:

The influence of Edgar Allan Poe on Charles Baudelaire is apparent in a comparison of Poe's 'The Raven' and Baudelaire's 'Brumes et Pluies.' Both do have similar themes but the depiction of depression or melancholia varies. Poe is much more pessimistic and self-involved, while Baudelaire tries to reconcile art and life. Baudelaire is looking for a middle way between the extremes of depression and the vision of the ideal. Memories are both a sign of mortality and the attempt to rise above human existence. They lighten the loss of the past by remaining as a sign of connection with this past.

The performance of solitude: Baudelaire, Rimbaud, and the resistance poetry of Rene Char

Article Abstract:

Comparing the idea of solitude as depicted by Charles Baudelaire, Arthur Rimbaud and in Rene Char's resistance poetry shows that all think of solitude as an ocular independence. In adopting a poetic stance free of ideology, these poets can make certain pragmatic and aesthetic choices. For Char, the Resistance's material conditions provided a metaphor for the reversal of the private and the public. In wartime France, the Resistance fighter had to be invisible and to communicate in a secret code.Char's poetics of solitude challenge the fascist ideology of crowd consensus.
