Comments on the articles by Sample and Diehl & Crescenzi

Article Abstract:

Susan G. Sample has made three important contributions to the understanding of the relationship between arms race and war. First, she removed the minute detail that has encumbered the debate for almost 20 years. Second, she showed that the variations in arms races studies have no substantial effect on results. Third, her conclusion that states engaged in an arms race are more unlikely to engage in disputes is supported by her introduction of the time lag. On the other hand, Paul F. Diehl and Mark J.C. Crescenzi offered a new research agenda and reanalyzed Sample's conclusion.

Many Lebanese have friends or relatives in Australia, especially the Lebanese around the Qadisha Valley. The valley was home to the ancient Maronite religious community, and contains monasteries that may date to the 4th century AD. Many Australian Lebanese try to return to the valley at least once a year, and there is a constant stream of immigration from Lebanon to Australia.
