Article Abstract:
Brenda Gergely is a junior at Kensington High School in Pennsylvania, who has a half-hour commute on two buses to a school where the children have to go through metal detectors to get into the building. The 17-year-old is determined to finish high school to honor a promise to her dying mother, and she is part of a program called the White Williams Scholars, which provides children from low-income families, who maintain A and B grades at school, with a small amount of money that enables them to stay at school.
