Marriage in Taiwan, 1881-1905: an example of regional diversity
Article Abstract:
The distinct social and economic conditions prevalent in northern and southern Taiwan during 1881-1905 resulted in a wide variation in the types of marriage. Marriages in traditional Taiwan can be categorized as the major, the minor and the uxorilocal types. The variation in uxorilocal marriages has possibly depended on childhood mortality. According to market hypothesis, high occurrence of the minor form of marriage in northern Taiwan is a distortion of the major form resulting from the unequal sex ratio and lucrative tea trade.

Governmentality and its consequences in colonial Taiwan: A case study of the Ta-pa-ni incident of 1915
Article Abstract:
An attempt is made to shift the focus of research about Taiwanese resistance during the colonial era from highly articulate forms of legalistic protest by urban elites to the deeds and motivations of men and women who were rural wage earners, petty entrepreneurs, and agriculturists. This has led to a better understanding of the broad range of political, socioeconomic, and cultural factors that helped to ignite the most dramatic acts of armed resistance to occur during the colonial era.
