Mongolia in 1992: back to one-party rule

Article Abstract:

Mongolia enacted a new constitution in Jan1992 and held elections on Jun 28 for its unicameral legislature, the State Great Hural. The Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party won 93.4% of the seats. The paramount economic policies implemented by the government were price liberalization, privatization and banking reform. Mongolia's foreign policy objectives were promoted by visits by Premier D. Byambasuren to Beijing, Tokyo and, in addition, normalization of ties with Russia was attained. Mongolia needs stronger opposition parties to ensure the continuance of democratization in its structure of government.

Mongolia in 1994: strengthening democracy

Article Abstract:

Mongolia was undergoing the second phase of its political and economic transformation in 1994 as the first Parliament and the president under the new Constitution were trying out the new political system. The country thus faces the challenge of strengthening its institutions and democratic processes prior to the third stage of its transformation, where a second Parliament and a new government will be elected. Overall, the economy continued to post improvement in 1994, despite a twofold rise in unemployment since 1991, growing poverty, oil and gas price hikes and a banking scandal.

Mongolia in 1995: gearing up for the 1996 elections

Article Abstract:

Mongolia made significant achievements in its foreign relations and economic performance in 1995. However, the continuing success of the country's transition from communism to democracy will depend on the outcome of the elections scheduled in Jun. 1996. Although the government has reiterated its commitment to democracy several times, the results of the election would be a better gauge of its performance.
